Of all the musicals in line for a movie adaptation, The Last Five Years seemed a reasonably unlikely choice. With its tiny cast and its non-linear narrative, one might expect it to remain on the intimacy of the stage alone.
"You always have a little bit of concern that it might not translate perfectly well - especially this piece," says Jeremy Jordan, who stars in the film alongside Anna Kendrick. "It was an experiment - how can we make this work? Those are challenges we were facing, and we knew those were coming. The biggest challenge was Schmuel, in the middle - a charactery, story song. Once we cracked it, it became one of our favourite parts of the movie. I think by the end of the movie, the viewer may just forget that we're singing things - and it becomes real."
Jordan admits that work for screen can be trickier than on stage for actors.
"I'm very proud of the film," he says. "Generally when you're doing film or TV, you are just rushing to get it all done, and you get a few chances to get it right, and that's that, and you move on - as an actor you don't have a lot of control, you have to hope that the people putting it together do a good job! With this, I felt that the director gave us a lot of input, and it really felt like a collaborative process."
Jordan got raves in the US for his role in Newsies - a production that's been tipped to come to the UK for some time now, but still hasn't.
"I've been hearing rumours about it for the past three years," he admits. "I can only imagine that it will. It ran on Broadway for a lot longer than they expected, and they just kicked off the tour recently. Now that's underway, I'd think they will."
Then he laughs. "Whether or not I'll be doing it is another question. I'm getting a little long in the tooth. I guess I could put a lot of make-up on! But I think it will come over. I hope it will. There have also been rumours about another show I did coming to London, Bonnie and Clyde. They're both shows a London audience would love."
Even if Jordan doesn't transfer with either show, he thinks British audiences are likely to see him soon - he's about to play a few concert dates around the US, and intends to head to the UK to perform in due course.
"I'm sure I'll be in London soon," he assures us.
