Hi Stuart, how are things going?
It's going good. It's been fun - getting to know everybody. There are only two of us from the original cast in the show, so it's nice to have some fresh energy as well. This is not a complete replica of last time. It's very exciting.
Is there anything that's changed on stage, or is it just different energy?
There are a couple of different things with the set. Last time we did it, we played to studio spaces, and now we're obviously in an authentic traditional theatre.
And what's Michael Crawford like?
He's brilliant! He's fantastic, always got a big smile on his face when he comes in. He seems thrilled to be back on stage. He's got a hell of a big job. He sings the entire show. He's excited, and he's definitely up for the challenge. If anyone can do it he can.
What's special about this show?
This show is the best score I've ever heard, really. There's no other show I'd have come back to do. It's magical, the writing is so clever and beautiful. It's a musical theatre actor's dream, and I think it will be a massive success for the composer, who's also a lovely man.
Obviously it's always a risk to open a new show - how are you feeling about that?
People like the period. People have tapped into that - this is Downton Abbey the musical! Anyone who's into that is going to love this show. It's a classic story. There are so many fans of the book - I don't think we'll have a problem with getting an audience.
Stuart Ward stars in The Go-Between, running at the Apollo Theatre from Friday 27 May.
