Hollyoaks and EastEnders actor Gary Lucy first took on the lead role of Gaz in the 2014 touring production of The Full Monty. He now returns to the part for the current touring production.
What made you want to be a performer?
I did classes when I was a kid at school and I caught the bug when I got my first TV role at 16. It's known to be a tough career, but I've somehow managed to keep working doing something I love, which I'm very grateful for. I mean, let's be honest, there are harder ways to earn a living then 'dressing up' and acting the clown!
Why did you want to be a part of The Full Monty?
It's such a brilliant script and Gaz is a gift of a role. I love playing to a live audience too. There's nothing like it - especially with this show!
Tell us about the character you're playing
Gaz is a good guy, a cheeky chap with a big heart, but he's a chancer and he makes some daft decisions, which sometimes get him into bother. His son is the most important thing in his life and he'll do anything for him.
What's your favourite thing about playing him?
Gaz is such a terrific part and it's exciting doing live theatre, as no two shows are the same. I love working alongside the cast too - they're great fun and are my mates.
Do you have a favourite moment in the show?
I love it all - I must do, as I keep on coming back!
How have you dealt with the prospect of baring all (literally) in your performance?
To be honest, it's such fun. We're all in it together - as long as the theatre is warm enough...
Why is the story of a 1997 film still relevant today?
I think The Full Monty covers so many issues that are still extremely relevant today, from mental health issues, to body image and unemployment. It's all there, but it's done with humour, which is why it works so well.
Any other projects coming up you can tell us about?
I do have a project in the wings for next summer when the tour is finished, but it's a secret at the moment, so you'll have to wait and see!
Why should people come to see The Full Monty?
It's a brilliant story and a great night out. Two hours of hilarious entertainment with iconic music too - you certainly won't be disappointed.
