Miriam Zendle talks to the Olivier Award-winning actress, who presented Maggie Smith with her award.
Have you enjoyed the evening?
Having to wait all that time before you go on and do a speech... not particularly! But yes, yes, it was a wonderful evening. Great delight to give the special award to my old friend.
It must be quite special...
Well, somebody mucked up the end, because they were going to sing a song, and he [Anthony Head] went 'no, carry on', and I thought 'thanks, you've ****ed up the whole thing!' I was so angry.
Will you be going to the afterparty?
Oh no, I didn't even know there was one.
You'll just be going home and relaxing?
Oh yes! We're both knocking on to nearly 80, we don't go to many parties.
But you're still working away...
Of course, actors do until they die.
What's up next for you?
Might be a musical, might be My Fair Lady. But that's a long way off, and in between I'll be doing some telly. But I've just come out of convalescence from a bad back operation. It's worked wonderfully.
You look very vibrant tonight!
It's knocked ten years off me, because last year I had that pain right across my eye, when you have a sciatic nerve being crushed, it goes across your back and down your leg and paralyses your leg.
I hope that won't come back!
Oh no, it won't come back, darling. Something else will happen, but that won't come back. No, that's all over, gone, finished. I had a wonderful evening, it's a great occasion. It was wonderful to see Lady Olivier there and that's about it, really, sweetheart.
