Musical theatre and indie songwriting are in a sense inextricably linked in that both are driven by storytelling through song - so it is perfectly natural that musical theatre-trained actor and up-and-coming indie pop star Alex James Ellison should combine these facets of his talent to write and perform an EP of brand new indie-pop songs with a fresh storytelling edge. The result is a five-track EP, Duvet Days (produced by Joe Davison of Auburn Jam Music), which will be released on March 22.
Brighton-born Alex trained at the prestigious BRIT School and also at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. In 2010 he won Brighton's 'Who Has Talent' competition, which culminated in a show at the Theatre Royal and a live performance on BBC Radio Sussex, and two years later he reached the finals of the Open Mic UK competition. He has since worked professionally as an actor and singer, appearing in commercials, films and theatre productions as well as touring the UK and abroad while filling the boots of Harry Styles in the world's leading One Direction tribute band 'The One Direction Adventure'.
Alex's songwriting influences include the likes of Ed Sheeran, McFly and Jamie Cullum and his EP features five original "unashamedly fun and catchy indie-pop" songs, penned by himself and writing partner Joe Sterling - another actor and budding singer-songwriter (who was seen at the Tabard Theatre in 2012/13 in the role of Ugly in Stiles and Drewe's musical Honk! and covered and played the role of Mowgli in the 2011/12 UK tour of The Jungle Book).
Pop and musical theatre star Lucie Jones (who reached the final eight of X Factor 2009 before going on to play Cosette in Les Miserables in the West End and to being "brutally murdered" on stage eight shows a week by Matt Smith in the recent musical version of American Psycho at the Almeida Theatre), has thrown her support behind Alex James Ellison's debut release: "Alex has written some dangerously catchy tunes for his debut EP. The lyrics are ones I want to learn and the clever intricacies of his musical mind are splashed all over these great pop tunes. I can't wait to hear more!"
Lucie will be supporting Alex at the launch gig for Duvet Days on Saturday March 22 at Proud, Camden - along with girl band XYRA (who reached the judges' houses stage of last year's X Factor) and Ross Candy (who made it to the final 12 in X Factor Series 3 with boy band Avenue and who went on to support McFly on their arena tour before releasing his own EP of 80s-influenced pop-rock last March, also produced by Auburn Jam Music).
A music video of one of the songs from Alex's EP, Where Do I Fit In?, featuring CBBC and Nickelodeon star Louisa Connolly-Burnham, will be released on Friday 28th February. Duvet Days will be available for download via all major online retailers from March 22 and physical copies are available to pre-order now from alexjamesellison.auburnjam.co.uk.
Alex's fans can keep an eye out on his social media pages for competitions and exclusive content, including how to join his personal guestlist with free entry to the launch party at Proud, Camden and an exclusive music gift, plus a chance to win a 'Duvet Day' courtesy of Alex, with a live performance in their living room!
