Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice made great waves in New York. Now the celebrated playwright's bold re-interpretation of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice makes its European premiere in a co-production between ATC, the Drum Theatre Plymouth and the Young Vic. For this new production, ATC artistic director Bijan Sheibani, fresh from his acclaimed National Theatre debut Our Class, is reunited with the team who created the award-winning The Brothers Size.
Alice in Wonderland meets Greek myth; Eurydice is a playful and heart-breaking American take on a timeless tale of loss, grief and redemption.
Sarah Ruhl's plays include In the Next Room or The Vibrator Play (currently running on Broadway), The Clean House (Pulitzer Prize Finalist, 2005; The Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, 2004); Passion Play, a cycle (Pen American award, The Fourth Freedom Forum Playwriting Award from The Kennedy Center); Dead Man's Cell Phone (Helen Hayes Award for best new play); Melancholy Play; Demeter in the City (9 NAACP image award nominations), Orlando and Late: a cowboy song. Her plays have been produced throughout the United States and translated into Polish, Russian, Spanish, Norwegian, Korean, German and Arabic.
As artistic director of ATC, Bijan Sheibani's directing credits include The Brothers Size (a co-production with the Young Vic) which was nominated for an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre and toured throughout the UK and internationally, his Olivier Award-winning production Gone Too Far! (Royal Court) and most recently Ghosts or Those Who Return (Arcola Theatre). Gone Too Far! and The Brothers Size were both revived in 2008. Other credits include Our Class (National Theatre - nominated for Best Play in the 2009 Evening Standard Awards), Other Hands and Flush, (Soho Theatre), Party Time and One for the Road (Battersea Arts Centre) and Tarantula in Petrol Blue with Aldeburgh Music.
ATC kicks off its 30th birthday year with this three way collaboration between long term co-producing partner, The Drum Theatre Plymouth (Bad Jazz, The Brief History of Helen of Troy) and The Young Vic.
