A Trilogy of Jollity Comes to The King's Head Theatre Image

This evening of quirky hilarity is presented by the ever-inventive irrational theatre at the King's Head Theatre, Islington on February 11and 12 at 7 pm.

First up is the world premiere of John Whittaker's 'The Proposal,' a one-act satirical opera from a short Chekhov play of the same title, tracing the trickiness of launching into a serious relationship.

John Whittaker's light-hearted treatment of 'The Proposal' follows his successful first opera 'The Three Wayfarers'.

His easy-on-the-ear melodic lines flow throughout this Puccini-influenced score for piano and flute - and there's plenty of compelling drama on stage. The composer William Walton considered the same play before alighting instead on Chekhov's 'The Bear' Peter Reynolds' The Sands of Time; originally written in 1993 is hailed by the Guinness Book of Records as the shortest opera on earth. Composer Reynolds, who used a libretto by Simon Rees, said the piece was intended to "match the boiling of an egg" and "to create a piece which bore the same relationship to opera as a miniature
does to a full-length portrait.

The fun evening concludes with the delightfully tuneful tale of a lottery win and its reversing fortunes, in Jacques Offenbach's one act opera Le 66. Written in 1856, Le 66 has been updated and will be performed in English for the first time in the UK, with a new libretto by Matthew Toogood.
