Live Canon - one of Greenwich Theatre's supported companies - will hold their international poetry competition prize-giving at the theatre onSunday, November 20, followed by a special Christmas concert on Monday, December 19.
The annual poetry competition, open to everyone, published or unpublished, has a first prize of £1,000, and a speci
Al Greenwich prize of £100 for the highest placed entry by a local poet who lives, works or studies in the London Borough of Greenwich.
The twenty-five writers short-listed for the award will have their work published in this year's Live Canon anthology and performed by the Live Canon ensemble at the prize-giving on November 20, when the winners will be announced.
"Live Canon were first formed with our support six years ago to perform classic poetry from memory," said James Haddrell, Greenwich Theatre's artistic and executive director. "Since then they have grown rapidly to perform at festivals and theatres around the country as well as publishing the work of a number of new poets and working on numerous cross-arts projects."
The Christmas concert - when free mulled wine will be served - will be a joint fund-raiser for Live Canon and the theatre. "We will perform Christmas poems but we'll also sprinkle in a few carols," said Helen. "It will happen on the set of the pantomime, Peter Pan, so that'll be very exciting as well.
"Greenwich Theatre is our spiritual home. It feels as if we have been around the world and are now coming back again, which is just lovely. We always know that when we put an idea to James Haddrell he's almost always going to say: 'That's great, let's do it, let's make it happen'."
