What happens when you combine the smash Broadway musicals Anything Goes and 42nd Street? You end up with Dames at Sea. A long-running hit off-Broadway, the show is a celebration of the vintage movie musical. It helped launch the career of Broadway veteran Bernadette Peters in its original production, which was notable in that it employed a cast of just six to affectionately parody the golden age of lavish Hollywood musicals.
Dames at Sea tells the story of Ruby, who steps off a bus from Utah and into her first Broadway show. But hours before the opening night curtain is set to rise, the cast learns that their theater is being demolished. With the help of some adoring sailors, Ruby and the cast set a plan in motion to perform the show in a naval battleship. Selected as "Best Musical of the Year" by Time, Newsweek, and Outer Critics Circle. Dames at Sea is scheduled for a Broadway revival in 2014.
