Deep in the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia, a servant girl named Grusha risks her life to rescue an abandoned baby from civil war. Overcoming violence and poverty, Grusha relies on kindness and perseverance to begin her own family. But when the child’s aristocratic mother comes to claim him, a judge calls upon the ancient Chalk Circle test to settle the dispute. Featuring live music, vivid characters, and daringly immersive staging, The Caucasian Chalk Circle is a timeless allegory of love, justice, and compassion told with humor and heart.
With its epic storyline, large cast size, and opportunities for inventive design, The Caucasian Chalk Circle is a perfect showcase for Constellation’s signature style: epic stories in an intimate space. Founding Artistic Director Allison Arkell Stockman and Managing Director A.J. Guban are thrilled to bring The Caucasian Chalk Circle to the 100-seat black box theatre at Source.
Constellation is also excited to unveil the dramatic new seating configuration for The Caucasian Chalk Circle: the audience will surround the stage on two sides, with three smaller seating sections that are recessed into the stage itself. Travelling through the audience, actors will enter and exit the playing space through ten different entrances. The Caucasian Chalk Circle represents the most immersive staging Constellation has ever accomplished, furthering the company’s reputation for spectacular yet intimate theatre.
