Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler, is a darkly gripping musical thriller that has garnered numerous accolades, including eight Tony Awards. This chilling masterpiece transports you to the underbelly of 19th century London, where a vengeful barber named Sweeney Todd seeks bloody retribution.
Wrongfully imprisoned by the lecherous Judge Turpin, Sweeney returns to London a broken man. He is taken in by the resourceful Mrs. Lovett, who runs a failing pie shop. Fueled by rage and despair, Sweeney transforms his barber's chair into a murder weapon. Mrs. Lovett, ever the pragmatist, hatches a gruesome plan – to use Sweeney's victims as ingredients for her "worst pies in London," turning Sweeney's murderous rampage into a profitable (and darkly comedic) enterprise.
Sweeney Todd is a hauntingly beautiful and unsettling musical.
