In a new Kennedy Center production, Pal Joey tells the story of a nightclub crooner who's pulled every which way by love, fortune, and fame, and features classics like "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" and "I Could Write a Book."
It's Chicago in the late 1940s and Joey Evans, a second-rate singer, womanizer, and draft dodger, schemes to obtain his dream--running his own nightclub. In Pal Joey, He meets Linda, a young and naïve woman impressed with his grandiose lies. They become romantically involved but things get complicated when the bored, wealthy socialite Vera enters the picture. When Vera's romantic interest in Joey becomes the key to fulfilling his dream, it starts a love triangle both comical and heart breaking. The score features such classic Rodgers & Hart songs as "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered," "Zip," and "I Could Write a Book." With a new book by four-time Tony Award(r) winner Terrence McNally (Ragtime, Master Class), music by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, and under the direction of Tony(r) nominee Christopher Ashley (last season's The Lisbon Traviata, Kennedy Center Sondheim Celebration, Xanadu, and Memphis on Broadway), Pal Joey promises to be the theatrical revival of the season.
