The Moth champion, David Rodwin tells a hilarious story about getting hired to write a musical about the history of Miami. To be staged on a boat. Owned by a Russian oligarch. Produced by a guy who sold timeshares. Hold tight as Rodwin takes his boss’s horrifying humor and spins it into gold. Who will win the death match between Californian culture and Floridian worldview? No one on a boat.
In addition to the unmaking of this musical, Rodwin shares his love affair with the history of Miami, despite its rabidly anti-Semitic founding fathers. He even discovers his great-grandfather may have been one of the 'Binder Boys' who fomented the 1920s Florida land rush bust and boom that made the 2008 financial crisis look like child's play.
Rodwin premiered Miami Madness, his 9th solo show, in April 2024 at the Wild Project and won the New York City Fringe Audience Choice Award.
Rodwin’s last show, F*ck Tinder: a love story, won Best Solo Performance at the 2018 Capital Fringe Festival during a completely sold-out run. It was also nominated for Best Solo Performance at the 2018 Hollywood Fringe Festival before touring to sold out runs throughout the U.S. and Canada.
David Rodwin (Writer/Director/Performer) is a Moth Champion who has toured 9 solo shows to over 30 cities. A Jonathan Larson Award-winner, Rodwin also wrote and composed 8 operas/musicals which were developed or produced at: LaMaMa, HERE, Mabou Mines, Dixon Place, American Opera Projects, The Berkshire Theatre Festival, The O’Neill, New Dramatists, ASCAP/Disney, Sacred Fools, Fool’s Fury, Highways Performance Space, The Duplex, Joe's Pub and The Public Theatre.
Rodwin worked in the writers’ rooms on TV shows from CBS to Disney and is glad to have returned to the stage where he can share his insane stories any way he wants to. He is currently a digital nomad without a fixed address while he tours his show.
The Story Emporium was founded by Rodwin in San Francisco to support the art of live storytelling. Their flagship program turns empty spaces into pop-up theatres.
