From November 27 to December 1, 2018, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) embarks across the United States to celebrate its 50th anniversary and Malta’s capital, Valletta, which was named the 2018 European Capital of Culture. The orchestra will be led by renowned conductor and honored artist of the Republic of Armenia, Sergey Smbatyan, named “one of the best” by the great composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki.
The MPO opens each performance with Rebbie?a, a symphonic poem penned by Maltese composer Joseph Vella, who was Malta philharmonic’s first resident conductor. Next, Travel Notebook, a concerto for piano and piano and orchestra by notable modern American-Maltese composer Alexey Shor, will feature international prize-winning Austrian pianist and Deutsche Grammophon artist Ingolf Wunder as a soloist (hailed as “ravishing” by The Guardian). The MPO rounds off its concerts with Dmitri Shostakovich’s famous Fifth Symphony.
Program:
Joseph Vella: Rebbie?a, Op. 45
Alexey Shor: Travel Notebook for Piano and Orchestra
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5
