theatreWashington Announces Inaugural theatreWeek, 4/23-29

theatreWashington announces the first annual theatreWeek, presented by The Washington Post. theatreWeek is a week-long celebration of Washington theatre that kicks off with the 28^th Helen Hayes Awards on April 23, 2012 and runs through April 29, 2012. With the rapid growth of professional theatre in the Washington region, theatreWashington aims to connect the theatre community to audiences with this new initiative.

“Theatre teaches, connects and moves us. We are fortunate, in the Washington area, to have some of the most imaginative and inspiring theatre companies in the nation,” said Victor Shargai, Chairman of the Board of theatreWashington. “As we celebrate the first of many theatreWeeks, we will engage diverse audiences of all ages and introduce them to the magic of live theatre.”

“We believe theatreWeek showcases Washington’s robust theatre scene, bringing the community together in celebration of our local talent,” said Katharine Weymouth, Publisher of The Washington Post. “We are excited to expand The Washington Post’s continued support of the local theatre community as the presenting sponsor of this new initiative.”

theatreWeek will feature a variety of activities and presentations for all ages, aiming to raise awareness for Washington’s dynamic, diverse, and world-class professional theatre. theatreWeek is a unique collaboration between theatreWashington and 34 Washington theatres and is presented by The Washington Post.

City leaders were key partners in the effort to recognize the significance of Washington theatre. Ward Two District of Columbia Council Member Jack Evans authored and introduced a resolution naming the week beginning April 23 as “theatreWeek.” The City Council passed the resolution on March 20, 2012. In addition, representatives of government and arts organizations in the District and around the Beltway are spreading the word about the region’s thriving theatre in “Why Theatre Matters” articles featured onwww.theatreWashington.org.
