Casting has been announced for The Hub Theatre's Fall production of David Yee's, carried away on the crest of a wave. The ensemble includes Nora Achrati, Ed Christian, Hedy Hosford, Andrew Ferlo, Rafael Sebastian Medina, and Ryan Sellers. All who will be called on to play multiple roles.
Nora Achrati returns to the Hub after playing Zina in last season's Act A Lady. Recent roles include Roza in Agnes Under the Big Top at Forum Theatre; Ishtar in Gilgameshat Constellation Theatre; and Rosalind in As You Like It with Lean & Hungry Theatre. Joining Achrati from Forum's Agnes Under the Big Top is Edward Christian. After being a company member with Alaska's Perseverance Theatre his DC credits includeThe Hampton Years at Theater J, Folger Theater's Henry V and the Helen Hayes award winning production of The Taming of the Shrew. This will be Christian's Hub Theatre debut.
Also making Hub Theatre debuts are Ryan Sellers, Andrew Ferlo, Rafael Sebastian Medina, and Hedy Hosford. Ryan Sellers joins the cast after a successful run of Miss Saigon at Signature Theatre. Sellers is a company member at Synetic Theatre. Andrew Ferlo's credits include Caesar and Dada and Six Characters in Search of an Author, at WSC Avant Bard and A Maze with Rorschach Theatre. Sebastian Medina is a recent graduate of George Mason's school of theatre, and local credits include The T Party at Forum Theatre and Live Wire at Theater of the First Amendment. Rounding out the cast is nine year old Hedy Gosford, who studies acting at the Academy of Fine Arts and at Synetic Theatre.
carried away on the crest of a wave will be directed by Hub's Artistic Director, Helen Pafumi. Pafumi recently directed the World Premier of Marc Acito's How I Paid For College and the Area Premier of Carole Frechette's John & Beatrice. She was nominated for the Helen Hayes Award in Outstanding New Play for her co-adaptation of Wonderful Life and is the recipient of the Puffin Foundation Award and the Washington Canadian Partnership Award.
The Hub Theatre welcomes Canadian playwright David Yee. Yee is currently the Artistic Director of fu-GEN Theatre Company, Canada's only professional Asian Canadian theatre company which he also co-founded. He is a Dora Mavor Moore Award nominated actor and playwright. His work has been produced internationally and at home. His last play, lady in the red dress, was nominated for the 2010 Governor General's Literary Award. carried away on the crest of a wave received its World Premier at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto this past year, where he is also a Playwright in Residence.
carried away on the crest of a wave explores how a singular, cataclysmic event-the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami-illustrates the interconnectedness of all things. From an escort in Thailand, to a Catholic priest in India, to a housewife in Utah, this is what happens when the events that tie us together are the same that tear us apart.
