The Barns is privileged to welcome Canadian folk stars, Dala, in their Wolf Trap debut, as they continue their ascent towards international prominence. Veterans of the Toronto music scene, the Amanda Walther/Sheila Carabine duo is gaining traction throughout North America, having just wrapped feature performances at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, Mariposa, and the 50th anniversary of the esteemed Newport Folk Festival. Reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, and the Everly Brothers, the soprano/alto combo sing both original compositions and covers with great lyricism and spirit. With influences ranging from classic Dylan to the more modern folk permutations of bands like Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver, the girls are already highly decorated with a Toronto Independent Music Award and five Canadian Folk Music Award nominations to their name. In addition to frequent tour stops throughout the U.S., Walther & Carbine were exposed to the masses via this year's PBS special, "Girls from the North Country", which is also available on CD and DVD.
Trio Cavatina, winner of the 2009 Naumburg Chamber Music competition and one of the youngest ensembles to ever perform at a variety of top tier United States venues, makes its Barns debut as part of Wolf Trap's Discovery Series. The trio rose to new heights in 2010 with a debut at Carnegie Hall as part of the Naumberg winning prize package, and plans are set in motion to appear in San Francisco, as well as contribute to the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society concert series. While they are certainly connected through a strong sense of commitment to the classical and romantic repertoire, they also earmark ample time toward the exploration of modern works by living composers. They are currently immersed in a recording of modern composer Leon Kirchner's three piano trios, the last of which was written specifically for Trio Cavatina.
