Teaching Young Artists to Stage Area Premiere of CRY-BABY THE MUSICAL

Drama Learning Center's professional training company for emerging young artists will present the area premiere of new Cry-Baby the Musical this June.

Adapted from the cult classic 1990 John Waters film, Cry-Baby follows the star-crossed teen romance between delinquent Wade "Cry-Baby" Walker and the rich and square Allison Vernon-Williams in 1950's Baltimore.

Cry-Baby boasts a book by Tony Award winner Thomas Meehan (The Producers, Hairspray, Annnie) and Mark O'Donnell. The memorable rockabilly score was created by dynamic comedy duo Adam Schlesinger and David Javerbaum, who won two Emmy Awards for original songs they wrote for Neil Patrick Harris to perform at the TONY Awards in 2011 and 2012. The duo also garnered a 2008 TONY nomination for their work in Cry-Baby. Cry-Baby enjoyed a brief run at Broadway's Marquis Theatre in 2008 with 45 previews and 68 performances. The 1990 feature film by John Waters starred a young Johnny Depp and Ricki Lake.

Drama Learning Center's Professional Training Company, TYA (Teaching Young Artists), presents its Spring production of Cry-Baby from June 16-24, 2017 at Drama Learning Center in Columbia. A select program available by audition only, the TYA program allows students to work in a professional theatre environment as they learn about all aspects of theatrical work. TYA has a strong history of bringing cutting-edge titles to local audiences. The group has previously mounted area premieres of Hands on a Hardbody, First Date, Carrie the Musical, GHOST the Musical, 13, Legally Blonde, and High School Musical. This production continues TYA's long-standing tradition of producing professional contemporary musical theatre.
