Senator Tammy Baldwin has been announced as the keynote speaker at next month's Midwest Family Equality Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Baldwin, Wisconsin's first woman Senator and the U.S. Senate's first openly gay member, was elected to the U.S. House in 1998 before winning her Senate seat in November.
The Midwest Family Equality Conference, held April 20th at Burroughs Community School in Minneapolis, is the longest running gathering of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT)-headed family community in the region. The weekend full of educational and social events features activities and sessions that allow LGBT-headed families and the professionals who work with them to learn more about today's important issues.
Senator Baldwin encouraged parents who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender to attend and learn how they can work together to ensure full equality for their families.
"Now is our chance to continue moving our country forward on the issue of equality," said Senator Baldwin. "We must do more to protect the gains we have made and fight for more progress. We must continue to chart this course of full equality for all."
The conference will also honor heroes and volunteers who have promoted family equality in the Midwest region, including: Ann-Kaner Roth of Project515; Monica Meyer, Executive Director of OutFront Minnesota; Jenny Williams, former chair of the Midwest Advisory Council; and Minnesotans United, the first campaign to defeat a constitutional amendment that sought to permanently limit the freedom to marry for same-sex couples.
