Synetic's visual poetry will bring Prospero's magical island to life on a water-filled stage in the ninth installment of the Silent Shakespeare Series, The Tempest, opening tonight, February 21. A romantic drama of epic proportions, The Tempest features spirits, monsters, witches, drunken fools and lithe lovers who will contort and cavort with passion and bravado in this larger-than-life production.
The Synetic stage will be flooded with water for the actors to dance and splash around in. The first three rows of the seated audience have been warned that they are in the "splash zone," which means they could be treated to a little extra audience interaction. Ponchos will be provided.
Directed by Synetic's Founding Artistic Director Paata Tsikurishvili and choreographed by co-founder Irina Tsikurishvili, The Tempest is a family affair in many ways--the Tsikurishvilis' son, Vato, stars as Caliban. The father-daughter team of Irakli Kavsadze and Irinka Kavsadze (playing Stephano and Miranda) will also appear together on stage. In October 2012, Synetic Theater's company members performed at the Rustavelli Theatre in Tblisi, Republic of Georgia--a triumphant homecoming for many of the actors, including the Tsikurishvilis and Kavsadzes. Kavsadze's father, Kakhi Kavsadze, is one of the most celebrate actors in Georgia--described as the "Georgian Marlon Brando"--and appeared on stage with the troupe in Host and Guest.
