Nadiya Ukraine (Hope of Ukraine)
For the first time since its homeland gained independence, the National Ballet of Ukraine is touring the United States. In a tour that was three decades in the making, and in the midst of an ongoing war, the company brought Nadiya Ukraine (Hope of Ukraine) to the Opera House at the Kennedy Center to start its 16-city tour.
The evening featured fourteen pieces that were a mix of many well known ballet pas from La Bayadere, Giselle, and other masterpieces, often with the classic Marius Petipa choreography, to variations of traditional Ukrainian folk dances, performed by Shumka, to the incredibly moving Prayer for the Fallen before intermission.
Combined with many 3D projections, the evening provided an immersive look at Ukrainian dance and some magnificent views of Ukraine itself. Take a look at Broadway World's exclusive look at opening night.
