The national touring company of Avenue Q makes a fuzzy and fun pit-stop at The National Theatre in Washington DC through December 9 before heading to Baltimore. Photographer Mark Rupp and other young fans were treated to a special VIP backstage tour with the cast and an introduction to the puppets and inner-workings of the hit Tony Award-winning musical.
Avenue Q blends puppets and people in a charmingly R-rated tale of friendship, love, sex and the search for purpose. The show, which opened on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre on July 31st 2003 and won Tony Awards for Best Book (by Jeff Whitty) and Best Score (by Robert Marx and Jeff Lopez),
Avenue Q has music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, book by Jeff Whitty, based on an original concept by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx; and directed by Jason Moore. Avenue Q has puppets conceived and designed by Rick Lyon; musical supervision by Stephen Oremus, and choreography by Ken Roberson.
