Producing Artistic Director Evan Hoffmann announces NextStop Theatre Company's sixth professional season of theatre in the Dulles Corridor. From a 30th Anniversary Celebration summer production to a wildly imaginative new interpretation of one of the most iconic movie musicals ever written, our 2018/19 Season at NextStop continues to bring diverse, ambitious, and accessible theatre to the region.
To celebrate 30 years of gathering for great live theatre in Herndon, NextStop will produce a special production, reuniting directors, designers, performing artists, and technicians from the organization's past. NextStop proudly presents a special community production event: Amour, a beautiful French musical fable about a man who walked right through the walls that confined him.
Kicking off the main stage season in September is the hit musical, The Wedding Singer. Based on the hilarious film starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, this is a big-singing, big-dancing, big hair tribute to the 1980's, directed by Producing Artistic Director, Evan Hoffmann. This nostalgic 80's musical will appeal to fans of NextStop's 2016 Helen Hayes award-winning production of Catch Me If You Can.
In the fall comes John Steinbeck's East of Eden. This beautiful new adaptation of Steinbeck's iconic novel asks if it is possible to escape the mistakes of previous generations and choose your own course. East of Eden resets the story of Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel in California at the beginning of the twentieth century, through the intertwining stories of two families. It is an American epic, grand in scope yet deeply personal.
Ringing in the New Year is the spoof musical comedy [title of show]. This is a musical about four friends writing a musical about four friends writing a musical. Jeff and Hunter, two struggling writers, hear about a new musical theatre festival, but the deadline for submissions is a mere three weeks away. With nothing to lose, the pair decides to try to create something new with the help of their friends, Susan and Heidi. Follow four friends on their hilarious journey through the perilous gauntlet of creative self-expression.
The next production will be a ground-breaking event for our community as NextStop presents The Wolves, a challenging Pulitzer Prize-nominated play by Sarah DeLappe about the lives of suburban high school girls. The play offers a heartfelt and piercingly honest look at young women today through the lens of their daily soccer warm-ups. For NextStop's production, the company will undergo an extensive casting search to hire local teenage actresses in their professional theatre debuts.
Next March new Managing Director Abigail Fine will direct the timeless farce Fallen Angels by Noel Coward. Coward's smash hit comedy follows the rivalry between two housewives awaiting the arrival of their exotic former lover. Depicting female sexual desire and frustration in a humorous manner, the first performances in 1925 outraged critics and was labeled "shocking and obscene."
Closing out the season is the golden age musical, Singin' in the Rain. From Producing Artistic Director Evan Hoffmann, comes a wildly inventive re-imagining of an American mega-musical as no one has seen it before. When the projector at a screening of the iconic film goes up in smoke, a handful of super-fans save the day... after all, in theatre, the show must ALWAYS go on.
"These shows range from the truly epic to the deeply intimate," said Producing Artistic Director Evan Hoffmann. "But each one is certain to bring our beloved community a unique and personal experience, filled with the kind of joy and fulfillment that you can only find in live theatre."
