The McLean Community Players (MCP) present 13 this winter at McLean's Alden Theatre. Director Kevin Sockwell leads a talented production team in staging this lively, captivating musical that reminds audiences of what it's like to be 13 again. The production runs January 30 - February 15, 2015, with evening performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday matinees at 2:00 p.m.
13, a hilarious, coming-of-age musical, has music and lyrics by the Tony Award-winning Jason Robert Brown and a book by Dan Elish and Robert Horn. The show revolves around a group of middle school students and their challenges fitting in and standing out. This amusing pop musical begins when the central character, Evan Goldman, is forced to move from New York City to a small town in Indiana after his parents' divorce. He has little time to establish his popularity among his fellow students and avoid an "un-cool" label that could last until high school graduation. Even though this show features a cast made up entirely of adolescents, the stories and emotions in this musical are timeless.
Director Kevin Sockwell says, "I wanted to direct 13 because it's a fun, emotionally engaging show with great music and humor. However, 13 also speaks of a time when most of us began to ponder questions about who we are and what we want from life as we embarked on the never-ending struggle of navigating relationships and finding our place in the world. At 13, we expect when we get older it will all be miraculously sorted out. Then, as adults, if we're lucky, we learn it was never about the destination, but about the lessons learned on this journey we call life."
13 opens January 30, 2015, at the McLean Community Center's Alden Theatre, 1234 Ingleside Ave., McLean, Virginia. Tickets are $23 or $25 with group rates available. For more information, call 703.790.9223. Complete show information is available at www.McLeanPlayers.org.
