Magnet Schools of America announced this February magnet schools across the nation will join
together to celebrate National Magnet Schools Month. In honor of the upcoming 60th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision oF Brown v. Board of Education, this year's theme is "Creating Opportunities for All."

Since this landmark case, magnet schools have played an integral role inAmerica's efforts to reduce school segregation and provide equal access to innovative educational opportunities for all students. Throughout the month of February 2014 magnet schools will showcase this rich tradition by hosting special events and activities nationwide.

"Magnet schools are the original form of public school choice and transcend the obstacles of traditional school attendance boundaries by allowing families to select schools that are most appealing to their children's academic interests and talents," said Scott Thomas, Executive Director of Magnet Schools of America. "Magnet schools are an essential component to school district portfolios and have proven to increase academic achievement, graduation rates, school attendance, parent and teacher satisfaction, and the benefits of diversity and inclusion."

There are approximately 3,400 magnet schools nationwide, enrolling more than 2.8 million students. Originally, they were created as a means of promoting voluntary school integration and improving the quality of America's
educational system.

Magnet schools continue to flourish and are preparing students for college and 21st century careers through specialized theme-based curriculum in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Fine and Performing Arts, Career and Technical Education, Business, Finance, Communications, Montessori,
and International Baccalaureate (IB); to name a few.
