Kennedy Center Presents the 17th Annual Page-to-Stage New Play Festival Image

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts hosts its 17th annual Page-to-Stage New Play Festival from Saturday, September 1 through Monday, September 3, 2018. The festival is a free three-day celebration of local theater featuring more than 60 companies from the D.C. metropolitan area. Theaters and artists in Page-to-Stage present open rehearsals, concert readings, and workshops of new plays that are often still in the development phase. Audience members may choose to engage in the creation through participatory activities or partake in post-presentation discussions with the artists, helping to shape future productions of the playwrights' works.

This year, Page-to-Stage embraces the Center's season-long exploration of The Human Journey by tackling subjects such as migration, identity, and discovery. Highlights include:

Gala Theatre's A Butterfly's Eyes, the story of an El Salvadorian teenager struggling to find solidarity on her journey to America

Alliance for New Music-Theatre's Women of Troy: Voices from Afghanistan, an exploration of Afghan and American women seeking hope in the midst of war

University of Maryland's Hapa, the history of Hawaii's often ignored cultural transformation from sovereign nation to paradisiacal destination

Federal Theatre Project's Glass Bottles, an examination of activism through environmental awareness.

The arts are one of humanity's most eloquent means of making sense of the world, and the Kennedy Center is honored to host the many theater companies from across the region as they share their compelling stories.

The festival's free performances reflect the dynamic makeup of the Washington, D.C. area, and offer something for everyone, whether a newcomer or a veteran to theater. Participating theaters include Theater Alliance of Washington, D.C., Mosaic Theater Company of D.C., and African-American Collective Theater. The Kennedy Center also welcomes back Signature Theater for another season of celebrating local work.
