England's most storied rivalry takes center stage at Folger Theatre in Friedrich Schiller's classic drama Mary Stuart from January 27- March 8, 2015. The gripping standoff dramatizes the historical events between Mary, Queen of Scots and her cousin, Elizabeth I of England. Richard Clifford (The Clandestine Marriage, She Stoops to Conquer, Elizabeth the Queen at Folger Theatre) directs this recent version translated by Peter Oswald. Kate Eastwood Norris stars in the title role opposite Holly Twyford as Queen Elizabeth I in a Tudor world flush with subterfuge and revenge.
Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, is imprisoned in England under charges of attempted regicide. Can her captor and cousin, Queen Elizabeth, bring herself to sign the death decree? Mary Stuart tells the story of two majestic women who battle prejudice, greed, lust, and ultimately each other in one of the most thrilling depictions of political power games in history.
Moving from Shakespeare to Schiller, Folger Theatre continues its 2014/15 of classic theater through the centuries. "We are excited to bring to our stage another gripping political drama. This translation of Schiller's great play is a thrilling account of Elizabeth I and Mary, a story that has fascinated for centuries," stated Janet Griffin, Artistic Producer for Folger Theatre. "We have assembled a remarkable cast, including two of Folger's favorite actors in the lead roles, and we welcome again director Richard Clifford to create a production which I know our audience will find compelling and entertaining. We are also delighted that Peter Oswald will be joining us for the opening."
Peter Oswald's exciting translation, which was first seen at the Donmar Warehouse and had a critically acclaimed West End and Broadway run, captures all the intrigue, emotion, and drama of this story. Director Richard Clifford says, "I have always admired the play's vivid portrayal of royalty, zealotry, and the human side of politics." One of its many strengths is the debate concerning power, and the use of that power to further an end. But does the end justify the means?"
Joining Ms. Norris and Ms. Twyford is an extraordinary award-winning cast that includes Nancy Robinette as Hanna Kennedy, Cody Nickell as the Earl of Leicester, Craig Wallace as the Earl of Shrewsbury, Louis Butelli as Sir Amias Paulet, Rajesh Bose as Lord Burleigh, and Todd Scofield as Sir William Davison. The production also features Ray Dooley (Melvil), Paul-Emile Cendron (Mortimer), Jeff Keogh (Drugeon Drury), and Nathan Winkelstein (O'Kelly).
The award-winning creative team includes four-time Helen Hayes Award-winner Tony Cisek (scenic design), Mariah Hale (costume design), Rob Denton (lighting design), and Patrick Calhoun (sound design).
