The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts calendar of events for the fall months has just been released. All events are subject to change without notice. Free performances are held each evening at 6 p.m. on the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage.
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2009

NSO FAMILY CONCERT
Spooky Sounds and Scary Tales
Keep the Halloween costume party going and come dressed in your spookiest get-up for this "spirited" Sunday afternoon concert event. Conductor Brad Lubman and the NSO will be wearing their own trick-or-treat outfits as they perform Steven Reineke's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow with narrator Lynda Carter and music from other scary tales. It's guaranteed to be a ghoulish good time! For age 5 and up. Come early for the Musical Instrument "Petting Zoo," a project of the Women's Committee for the NSO. Immediately following the 3 p.m. performance, meet Brad Lubman and special guests for a free Kids' Chat.

Cate Blanchett stars as Blanche DuBois in the U.S. premiere of Sydney Theatre Company's production of Tennessee Williams's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, directed by Liv Ullmann. With a story that pits the false gentility of the southern Belle Blanche against the earthiness of her working class sister Stella and her short-tempered brother-in-law Stanley Kowalski, A Streetcar Named Desire is a collision of character that keeps audiences holding on tight from beginning to end. She misses her mother, who is a soldier in Iraq, and she will soon have to make the decision between the grandeur of her fantasies and the little miracles that happen every day. This funny and warmly truthful play will make your heart sing. Age 9 and up. Through November 15.

Set today in the Shear Madness hairstyling salon, this record-breaking comedy is Washington's hilarious whodunit. After more than 9,600 performances, the show has stayed in great shape, keeping all the bounce, body, and shine of opening night. ABC-7 News's Arch Campbell says Shear Madness is "the most fun I ever had at the Kennedy Center."

Ariadne auf Naxos
Tragedy and comedy collide when two sets of performers - one an opera company and the other a commedia dell'arte troupe - are forced to perform together. The results are cleverly amusing and surprisingly touching in this brilliant jewel by Richard Strauss for lovers of opera and theater. The production is conducted by Andreas Delfs and features Iréne Theorin, Pär Lindskog, and Lyubov Petrova, Sung in German with English supertitles. Through November 13. Note: Supertitles may not be visible from the rear of the orchestra.

World Premiere of "COSMIC REFLECTION"
Classical Archives is presenting the world premiere of Nolan
Gasser's narrated symphony, "Cosmic Reflection." The musical composition portrays the complete history of the Universe, from the Big Bang to the present day. The performance by the Boston University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Maestro David Hoose, and featuring narration by Carey Harrison, son of Rex Harrison, along with a video presentation by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center; the concert will also feature the acclaimed American Brass Quintet.

In this epic conclusion of Wagner's Ring cycle, Brünnhilde and Siegfried embark on a quest to restore Alberich's ring to the Rhine, bringing about the devastation of Valhalla and the gods. This special concert presentation features original cast members from WNO's Ring, including Ian Storey, Iréne Theorin, Gordon Hawkins, and Alan Held. Philippe Auguin conducts.
