Beginning April 23 for three weekends, the women from Jerry Herman's hit musicals will grace the Alden Theatre stage in his cabaret-style revue -- appropriately styled Jerry's Girls. Nine talented vocalists from all over the Washington area will sing and dance their way through more than thirty of Herman's tunes, including the title numbers from Mame, Hello Dolly! and Milk and Honey.
Stefan Sittig, who directed MCP's recent highly popular composer-based musical, Red Hot & Cole, is directing and choreographing Jerry's Girls, and RoseMary Dyer is Music Director. MCP's Mike Scott, who produced our last two July musicals, Evita and Oliver!, is the producer.
In his playbill notes for the show, Director Sittig sums up Jerry Herman's place in modern American musical theatre: 'While his work may not have the intellectual complexity of Sondheim, nor the over the top bravura of Andrew Lloyd Webber, it is the quintessence of the deeply American, hummable 'show tune'. If there is such a thing as a modern American composer, Herman is it. Irving Berlin may have lit the torch of the 'American Popular Song', but Herman has been the keeper of that flame ever since.'
The list of nationally-prominent actresses and vocalists who have appeared in various productions of Jerry's Girls - both in the original Broadway version and in a number of subsequent presentations - is truly stunning. For a list of these performers and their brief biographies, see our website.
Performances will be held at 8 pm on April 23, 24 and 30, and on May 1, 7 and 8. Matinee performances at 2 p.m. will take place on April 25 and May 2.
