Continuing its ongoing efforts of supporting the development of new musicals and plays under its SigWorks program, Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA is currently workshopping SCKBSTD by Grammy Award-winning composer/lyricist Bruce Hornsby, lyricist Chip deMatteo and book writer Joe Calarco (Shakespeare's R&J, Walter Cronkite is Dead) based on an original book by Clay McLeod Chapman (rest area, The Tribe Trilogy). The workshop will culminate in an invitation only presentation.
The current workshop is led by Jeremy Kushnier (Broadway's Jesus Christ Superstar, Signature's Chess), Emily Skinner (Broadway's Billy Elliot: The Musical, Signature's Dirty Blonde) and Brian Charles Johnson (Broadway's American Idiot, Spring Awakening).
SCKBSTD is a coming of age story that explores how society treats those regarded as "other." The show takes place during a single day in a small Virginia town where for weeks a stranger has been driving ominously through, causing fear and paranoia. SCKBSTD first premiered in 2011 at Virginia Stage Company in Norfolk, VA.
The cast for the workshop is rounded out by Alex Alferov (Arena Stage's Fiddler on the Roof), Jody Ashworth (The Hollywood Bowl's South Pacific), Sherri Edelen (Signature's Gypsy), Lesley Hamilton (Signature's Midwestern Gothic), James Konicek (Shakespeare Theatre's Man of La Mancha), David Landstrom (Olney Theatre's Avenue Q), Kevin McAllister (Signature's Showboat), Ines Nassara (Signature's Crossing), Nova Y. Payton (Signature's Dreamgirls), Tom Simpson (Signature's The Threepenny Opera), Chris Sizemore (Signature's Miss Saigon), John Leslie Wolfe (Signature's Diner) and Signature in The Schools apprentice Abby Hendricks.
SCKBSTD is produced by Signature Theatre in association with Spiral Staircase LLC, Mike Rafael and David Riemer.
New work at Signature Theatre is sponsored by The Reva and David Logan Foundation.
