Creative Cauldron's Learning Theater Ensemble presents an original adaptation of A Little Princess Sara Crewe, the beloved children's novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Featuring a book by Ellen Selby, music by Matt Conner and lyrics by Stephen Gregory Smith, A Little Princess captures the spirit of the novel and its salute to the power of imagination. Directed by Ellen Selby and Creative Cauldron Producing Director, Laura Connors Hull, A Little Princess Sara Crew will run from November 3rd through 19th, 2017 at ArtSpace Falls Church. Press Night for A Little Princess is Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 7:30 PM.
In Hodgson' classic tale, a sudden change of fortune leaves wealthy Sara Crewe alone and penniless in the cold of a London winter. When her friends at Miss Minchin's School for Girls turn into taunting enemies, and Miss Minchin's greedy expectations of her "star pupil" turn into bitter rage, Sara must draw upon her incredible power of imagination, her clever wit, and her generous heart to sustain her. The story has inspired numerous films, television episodes and other stage musicals. In Creative Cauldron's unique adaptation the historical stories that Sara uses to inspire her schoolmates (Joan of Arc, Queen Elizabeth, Marie Antoinette) come to life via a storyteller's chorus that weaves throughout the production.
Arianna Vargas, a veteran of Creative Cauldron's educational programs who has also appeared in professional productions of Caroline or Change, A Christmas Carol Memory and The Wizard of Oz at the cauldron, will play the role of Sara Crewe. She is joined by 24 other young people enrolled in the Learning Theater program and two professional actors: Will Mark Stevenson and Izzy Smelkinson. Will appeared at Creative Cauldron last season as Fagin in Oliver Twist and as Bob Cratchit in last season's Christmas Carol Memory. Will appears in A Little Princess in the dual roles of Captain Crew, Sara's father, and Carrisford, her father's friend. Making her Creative Cauldron debut as the irascible Miss Minchin will be Izzy Smelkinson. A recent graduate of the Musical Theater Training program at American University, Izzy's credits include: Keegan Theatre, Dogfight (Helen Hayes nominee), and Mack, Beth (Geek One).
The creative team for A Little Princess Sara Crewe includes, Margie Jervis as Scenic and Costume Designer, and Dwight Townsend-Gray as Lighting Designer/Stage Manager, and Warren Freeman as Music Orchestration.
