Cravin' Dogs-one of the most tenured bands in the D.C. area-returns to The Barns at Wolf Trap in celebration of their 25th anniversary and to unveil their new album, Sounds Like A Wiener! The album, (a pun on the saying "sounds like a winner"), is Cravin' Dogs' first full-length album of original material since their 2003 release, Roadtrip. The 12 all-new songs feature the band's beloved, signature folk/roots-rock sound, but also venture into crunching guitar-rock, calypso, and quirky piano-based pop. The band is pleased to offer the CD to press on March 16, in advance of the release date at Wolf Trap.
The first Cravin' Dogs incarnation emerged from the District's folk music scene in the mid-1980s, which also produced such artists as Mary Chapin Carpenter and the Kennedys. By 1989 they had morphed from an acoustic trio to a rock'n'roll quartet, and in 1991 they released their self-titled debut CD. Since then, they have released eight full-length albums of original material, including a live album recorded at the Black Cat, and a compilation of previously unreleased songs. Over the years, Cravin' Dogs has shared the stage with such national acts as Chuck Berry, the Dave Matthews Band, Styx, Cake, Aquarium Rescue Unit, and Gillian Welch.
Cravin' Dogs currently consists of original members Caldwell Gray (lead vocals, guitar and piano) and Tom Helf (drums), together with long-time members John Penovich (lead guitar), Todd Baker (electric violin) and Barry Warsaw (bass). All band members have extensive ties to the D.C. metro-area community. Aside from his involvement with Cravin' Dogs, Caldwell Gray is the chief sound engineer at Strathmore Performing Arts Center, and live sound engineer for Bruce Hornsby's touring band.
