Constellation Theatre, "A must see destination," according to the Washington Post, is pleased to announce its next performance, the Tony Award-winning play, Equus by Peter Shaffer. Directed by Amber McGinnis Jackson, starring Michael Kramer (Martin Dysart) and Ross Destiche (Alan Strang), and featuring Michael Tolaydo (Frank). Equus will run from January 13th to February 14th at Source (1835 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC).
Equus tells the story of Alan Strang (Destiche), a troubled teenager whose dangerous obsession with horses leads him to commit an unspeakable act of violence. Psychiatrist Martin Dysart (Kramer) investigates to uncover the motivation behind Alan's shocking brutality, and finds himself drawn in by the devotion and desire that fuel his young patient. Ritualized worship and sexual ecstasy entangle in this theatrical masterpiece featuring a chorus of human horses.
According to Constellation Theatre's Artistic Director, Allison Arkell Stockman, the themes in Equus are in line with the problems facing the world at this moment. "In a time of religious extremism and outbursts of violence from troubled and isolated young men," says Stockman, "Equusis just as relevant and powerful today as the day it debuted in London in 1973. Equus reveals the wild and primal desires that grow within a young man's heart."
Apart from winning a Tony Award for Best Play, Equus has also received the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award and the Drama Desk Award for Best Play.
