These innovative, two-hour, multi-disciplinary performances mark the 10th anniversary of Congressional Chorus' cabarets at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. What started as a twoshow run has now become a fourshow run with an invited dress rehearsal that all sell out each year. TINSELTOWN features a specialty dance ensemble, full chorus "choralography," a swingin' seven piece jazz band, and a vibrant movieinspired stage set. This 21-song concert celebrates the music of the movies features Academy Award Winning Songs from as early the 1930s all the way to 2015.
"Everybody loves the movies, and this cabaret has something in it for everyone, from the nostalgia of the movies of the 30's to 'Glory,' the moving anthem by rapper John Legend from the 2015 movie Selma, a documentary based on the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery," said Artistic Director & Conductor David Simmons.
TINSELTOWN features choral, dance & instrumental renditions of Academy Awardwinning songs including: "Let It Go" from Frozen (2013), "You'll Be In My Heart" from Tarzan (1999), "Fame" from FAME (1980), "Days of Wine and Roses" from the movie of the same name (1962), "Mona Lisa" from Captain Carey, U.S.A. (1950), and "Over The Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz (1939). You'll hear an Elvis Presley styling from the movie Viva Las Vegas, a salute to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and Barbra Streisand's "Don't Rain on My Parade." Additionally, the 24member Congressional Chorus Chamber Ensemble, a part of the chorus that focuses on a capella arrangements, outreach and cultural ambassadorship, will perform "Somewhere Out There" from An American Tale, and "Axel F" from Beverly Hills Cops.
The house features 18 reserved tables of six and general admission stadium seating for 98 patrons, allowing us to reach over 1,040 patrons during this production run. The Artistic Director's narration between pieces provides insights about each song as well as the context in which they were written. The program booklet contains historical notes on national and international events during the decade.
The Congressional Chorus was founded in 1987, and has been promoting American music for every age for 29 seasons.
