Annette Bening will receive this year's Will Award, presented by the Shakespeare Theatre Company, the Washington Post reports. Early in her career, Bening acted in Shakespeare's plays, as well as other classical theatre, at San Francisco's American Conservatory Theatre. More recently, she has appeared in MEDEA and THE CHERRY ORCHARD, as well as the 1995 film version of Richard III.
The Shakespeare Theatre Company's artistic director, Michael Kahn, told the Post, "The major reason is how much I admire people who have a hugely successful film career and then go back to do theater. This is a way of celebrating a movie star who, like Al Pacino, goes back to the theater and does the difficult roles."
Bening will receive the award on October 3. The Will Award was first presented in 1988.
Annette Bening's credits include the play COASTAL DISTURBANCES, as well as the films 'The Grifters,' 'American Beauty,' 'Being Julia,' 'Mrs. Harris,' and 'Running with Scissors.' Her latest film is 'The Kids Are All Right.'
