Jason Miller's drama That Championship Season, which in 1973 became one of the only plays to win the Best Play Tony, the New York Drama Critics Award, and the Pulitzer Prize, will be re-imagined for its new run at the American Century Theater. The play follows a group of middle-aged men reuniting with their high school basketball coach twenty years after they won the championship, only to have the failures and disappointments of their lives uncovered as the evening continues.
However, director Ed Bishop has re-imagined the show with an African American cast, stating in the press notes, "This production of
That Championship Season will break new ground as we see the loss of hopes and dreams from a different perspective." American Century Theater artistic director Jack Marshall adds, "Casting a play can often be done just as a gimmick, meant to draw in audiences without advancing the play. But in the case of this play, the African-American cast cracks open the script and releases provoking questions and confrontations."
That Championship Season stars Omar A. Bah, Morgan J. Hall, Ron Lincoln, Joseph A. Mills III, and Elliott Moffitt. Produced by Rhonda Hill, the show's creative team includes Michael Switalski (set designer), Thomas B. Kennedy (lighting designer), Matt Otto (sound designer), Rip Claassen (costume designer), Ellen Dempsey (assistant director), and Kelly Armstrong (stage manager).
That Championship Season performances are at Theater II, Gunston Arts, Center, 2700 S. Lang Street, Arlington, VA 22206.
