The Alden Theatre's Puppetry Festival on Saturday, Feb. 12, will give children, ages 4 through 8, insight into the wonderful world of puppets. The festival will include two shows by regional puppet companies and craft activities that will allow children to create their own puppets. Hours are 1:30-4:30 p.m. Tickets are $12, $10 for McLean tax district residents. The event will be held in the Community Hall of the McLean Community Center (MCC), which is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue.
Grey Seal Puppets of Charlotte, N.C., will perform Tangle of Tales at 1:30 p.m. Three favorite folktales from around the world come to life with a touch of the familiar and a taste of the new. Using a variety of puppet styles, Grey Seal will perform The Frog Prince from Germany, Three Billy Goats Gruff from Scandinavia and The Three Little Pigs from England. Barefoot Puppets, of Richmond, Va. will perform Trickster Tales at 2:15 p.m. Can a spider defeat an elephant at tug-of-war? Overpower a python? Capture a cloud of hornets? All things are possible with the world-famous trickster Anansi the Spider. Expressive rod puppets, original music and lots of puns enliven these traditional stories from West Africa. Following the two performances, children will have an opportunity to make puppets at "puppet creation stations" located around the room.Videos
