After premiering their hit, off-the-wall comedies like Amelia Earhart... IN SPACE and I'm Margaret Thatcher, I Is at the Capital Fringe Festival, AnyStage Theater is presenting a night of absurd scripts and short films. The event will be held on September 27th at 7:30, at Busboys & Poets on 14th and V NW. While donations are encouraged, this will be a free and open reading of new titles.
The pieces are a mixture of plays written by members of AnyStage Theater and submissions from the larger DC theater community, representing new ideas from artists looking to hone their craft. Highlights will include: Watergate (With Puppets!)- A recklessly abridged retelling of the scandal that brought down the Nixon Administration, told in Muppet style; The Serial Magician- The story of a man who's been forbidden by law from practicing his life's passion: magic tricks; Family Secrets Drama- A screwball parody of the works of Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, and August Wilson, where dark revelations surface during a dramatic family dinner.
"After I'm Margaret Thatcher, I Is, we began to get a real sense from our audiences that they appreciate the whimsically dark style we've developed, and that they were looking forward to our next original work," says company member and Certified Grownup Kirsten Koch. "The thing with us, though, is that we create insane original works every other weekend. At the end of this reading, we will allow the audience to vote on which plays they like and would like to see us pursue further."
The company is very excited for this opportunity to put ideas out in the open and receive audience feedback right at the ground level, and hope to see new and old theater enthusiasts there.
