Shakespeare’s beloved tale presents a stage world full of order and disorder, appearance and reality, confusion and conflict, that ultimately leads to love and marriage. Really? Or is it all a dream? That’s for the audience to decide. As Theseus, Duke of Athens and Hippolyta, the Amazon Queen plan their nuptials, they are faced with a dark family dispute over a father’s rights and a daughter’s desire. When Hermia is faced with either marrying the man her father Egeus has selected for her or choosing either death or life in a convent, she and her true love Lysander come up with an alternate plan. They run to the forest to make their escape and are followed by Demetrius, the man Hermia’s father has arranged for her to marry, and Helena, a woman desperately trying to win back his affection.
Oberon, the King of the Fairies, and his henchman. Puck decide to meddle in the lovers’ troubles while at the same time enacting Oberon’s revenge on Titania, his queen, who has denied him a simple request. In the midst of all this, a struggling troop of wannabee actors are rehearsing a play of “tragical mirth” to perform in front of the duke on his wedding day. What could go wrong?
