It caused a sensation when it was first heard in 1976. The Claude Bolling Suite, a brilliant combination of jazz flute and classical piano, will be heard in a special concert at Middlebury's Town Hall Theater on Wednesday, January 30.

Middlebury musicians Cathie Ott (flute) and Tim Guiles (piano) will play the challenging work, joining forces with Peter Williams (bass) and Craig Benson (drums).

One reviewer called the piece "pure, propulsive magic," citing Bolling's "rich stew of musical influences." Yo-Yo Ma is such a champion of the piece that he has recorded a version reworked for cello and piano.

Among other works in the concert will be Earl Wild's solo piano arrangement of Gershwin's "Embraceable You."

The concert begins at 7:30 pm, Wednesday, January 30. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at 802 382-9222, www.townhalltheater.org, at the THT Box Office (Mon-Sat noon-5pm) and at the door.
