The NNPN World Premiere of DOUBLEWIDE Rolls Through Vermont Stage

National New Play Network, the country's alliance of nonprofit theaters that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays, celebrates the continuation of the Rolling World Premiere Doublewide by Stephen Spotswood at Vermont Stage. The play will receive a total of four distinct NNPN RWP productions, rolling through Member Theaters Florida Repertory Theatre (Fort Myers; September 22-October 29, 2017), Florida Studio Theatre (Sarasota; August 2-20, 2017), Vermont Stage (Burlington; January 24-February 11), and Williamston Theatre (MI; January 27-Feburary 18, 2018). Doublewide is NNPN's 66th Rolling World Premiere.

In an NNPN Rolling World Premiere, the Network provides production support to the playwright and the partnering theaters, including assistance with the creation and the contracting of the premiere agreement, collaborative interactions between the theaters, and travel and housing funds for the playwright to further develop the play in each city.

The Starkey's version of the American Dream is a modest one: to build a home on their one-acre plot of land, replacing their double wide trailer with something their daughter can eventually inherit. When their aspirations are challenged by forces beyond their control, the family must decide just how far they will go to hold on to them and to each other. Doublewide is a heartfelt and resonant comedy about a working class family's elusive dreams.

Stephen Spotswood is a DC-based playwright, educator, and journalist, and received his MFA in Playwriting from Catholic University in 2009. Known as Sarasota's Contemporary Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre was founded in 1973 by Artist Jon Spelman. Starting out as a small touring company, FST traveled to places such as migrant camps and prisons. The company then acquired the former Woman's Club building, becoming the first permanent venue. Shortly after Producing Artistic Director Richard Hopkins arrived, the building was purchased and renamed The Keating Theatre.
