Not since the mid-1980's, when the Vermont Ensemble Theater produced plays in a big white tent, has the town of Middlebury hosted a true summer theater festival. That's about to change, as Town Hall Theater announces the first annual MiddSummer Nights Theater Festival.
This festival will be unique. Instead of presenting several plays each summer, MiddSummer Nights will present three different theater companies – a celebration of the best theater in the state.
"I've always been interested in bringing terrific productions from around the state to our lovely jewelbox theater," says THT executive director Douglas Anderson. "If a play is terrific in Montpelier, or Weston, or Bennington, why not give Middlebury audiences a chance to see it?"
Anderson is already in touch with theaters around the state to plan the second season. "Everyone wins. The theaters get more mileage out of their good shows, and Middlebury audiences are treated to a wonderful summer of theater."
The first MiddSummer Nights Theater festival features an Obie-winning comedy and two hit musicals. All tickets are $20, and are on sale now at www.townhalltheater.org, 802 382-9222, at the THT Box Office (Mon-Sat, Noon– 5 pm) or at the door, if available.
