This year's Voices of Community series presented by Sandglass Theater is going big!  Stretching beyond the walls of their intimate theater in Putney to reach out to the larger community they will present "Live From The Edge" by Universes Theater Ensemble, visiting artists from New York City in larger venues in both Bellows Falls and Brattleboro.  Universes has crafted a unique and explosive voice with their multi-cultural performance that turns the poem into communal activism.  "Live From The Edge" is an evening filled with a blend of slam poetry and theater that looks at life America through the eyes of these New York artists who have created their own brand of fusion theater.  Performances will take place Friday, April 9 at the historic Bellows Falls Opera House, and Saturday, April 10 at the New England Youth Theater in Brattleboro. Boccelli's on the canal (Bellows Falls) will be open before the show on Friday (www.boccellisonthecanal.com).

Redefining what theater is and who it speaks to, Live From The Edge is a unique performance event.  Big, bold, authentic, and piercingly relevant! Ensemble members Steven Sapp, Mildred Ruiz, Gamal Abdel Chasten, and "Ninja" utilize each person's unique realms of performance and life experience.  They draw from Jazz, Spanish Boleros, Gospel, the Blues, Hip-Hop, and more to create an exuberant, insightful, and eloquent evening's entertainment.  Sandglass Theater is able to present Universes through the support of NEA and NPN.  Universes tours world-wide; in the past year alone they have been to eleven cities in the states as well as the Encuentros Festival in Columbia; they are currently traveling to New Orleans, before heading to the Northeast.

Sandglass Theater presents the fifth edition of its bold series: "Voices of Community: A Performance Series on Diversity". Acclaimed world-class performers from diverse geographical and cultural backgrounds will bring their unique talents to Vermont.

This year's bill also includes an extended 2 week visit from Los Angeles artist Lyena Strelkoff, whose performances last spring completely sold out.  On April 23-24 she will be returning to Sandglass Theater with her powerful show Caterpillar Soup.

The performers featured in this series have earned a reputation not only for being brilliant entertainers, but also for their courageous subject matter; these artists do not shy away from controversy, they proudly accept the challenge, creating moving theater that inspires audiences. This series also includes exciting opportunities for community groups and schools to engage with performers though workshops and residencies, call Sandglass for details. These artists present engaging work to help integrate the diverse voices of their communities with the diverse voices of our own.

Tickets for all shows are $15, $10 for students and seniors
