George F. Walker is one of Canada's most prolific playwrights, winning countless awards for his work, including the prestigious Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement. His plays have been performed worldwide and have been translated into many different languages. Problem Child is part of a six-play cycle titled Suburban Motel. Each play is a separate, full-length, one-act work, however all touch upon similar themes and share the same setting of a "run-down motel room." Walker's plays take an absurdist approach to the harsh realities of life. He combines humor with difficult times, making his characters relatable on many different levels. Problem Child gives voice to the struggles of those less fortunate who are trying to reunite their families. R.J. and Denise are at the mercy of "the system."
The artistic team is packed with some of Vancouver's most promising emerging talent. Director Alex Kirkpatrick is a recent graduate of Studio 58. He has worked at the National Arts Centre, Great Canadian Theatre Company, Caravan Farm Theatre and Gateway Theatre. He is currently assisting costume designer Mara Gottler at Bard on the BeacH. Lindsay Curl is producing and performing in Problem Child as part of her Acting Apprenticeship at Pacific Theatre. She was recently seen in The Shape of a Girl (Stone's Throw) and Corleone: The Shakespearean Godfather (Pacific Theatre/Classic Chic). The show also features Conor Stinson O'Gorman, a recent graduate of Studio 58. In 2016, he was listed #7 in Vancouver Presents' "Top Ten Performances and Moments", by Mark Robins, for his role of Roy M. Cohn in Studio 58's Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches.
