Ruby Slippers Brings MARINE LIFE to the Firehall Arts Centre

Ruby Slippers Theatre is proud to produce the Western Canadian premiere production of Marine Life by Rosa Laborde in association with the Firehall Arts Centre from March 15-23, 2019.

The story revolves around an environmental activist who falls in love with her opposite, while her co-dependent brother spirals into chaotic self-destruction and does everything he can to push the lovers apart. This smart new play asks us whether our failings at human intimacy are inextricably linked to our failure to protect our planet. Incorporating magic realism, humour and live music, Marine Life explores themes of environmentalism, creativity, mental illness and personal responsibility in a delicately romantic dark comedy, set against a backdrop of apocalyptic proportions.

Marine Life is Directed by Diane Brown and featuring Christine Quintana, Sebastien Archibald and Alen Dominguez. Set design by Drew Facey, lighting design by John Webber, video design by Jordan Watkins and Ryan McDonald, sound design by Malcolm Dow, costume design by Jessica Oostergo, musical direction by Jeff Gladstone, stage managed by Susan Miyagishima, and assistant stage managed by Heather Barr.

Rosa Laborde? is a Canadian playwright, screenwriter, director and actress. She is playwright-in-residence at Tarragon Theatre and Aluna Theatre. Her play Le?o was shortlisted for the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play and the Governor General's Award for English-language drama.

For three decades Ruby Slippers' two-tiered mission has been to (1.) Further the voices of people on the femme spectrum and (2.) Promote cross-cultural pollination through presenting crucial Quebec works in English. All of their work represents under-represented voices and social issues, inspiring independent critical thought, communion, diversity, and inclusivity.
