We are good at naming that which makes us different. We are bad at naming that which makes us the same.
After debuting a sold-out run at The Cultch, Kokoskaco presents a remounted version of "The Mirror Test"- a compassionate comedy by artist/clinical counselor Kevin Kokosca, with dramaturgy by TJ Dawe.
One has never met a mirror he didn't like. The other can't stand to see himself. At a weight loss camp in California, a skinny Canadian counsellor-in training will attempt to form a relationship with his first ever psychotherapy client; a young American man with a binge-eating disorder. Directed by Fei Ren (CBC's The Romeo Section), "The Mirror Test" is a fictionalized account of writer/performer Kevin Kokoska's lived experience. It follows the awkward, affective, and often humorous journey of two men who look different, yet feel the same.
"It talks about real stuff. Body image, obesity, self image, self presentation - and does so with vulnerability," says Dramaturg, TJ Dawe. "There's nothing I love more than material that digs deep into the real stuff." Dawe wrote and performed "Medicine" (Firehall Arts Centre), which featured post-show Q & As with Dr. Gabor Mate, as well as directed and co-created "PostSecret: the Show," which played two runs at the Firehall Arts Centre and did a twenty-five city US tour this Spring. After the opening night of "The Mirror Test," there will be a post-show Q & A Dawe, Kokosca, and Ren.
KOKOSKACO is a three-part company offering clinical counselling, creative consulting for performers, as well as non-traditional promotion of mental health. Kevin Kokosca is a psychotherapist, actor, and teacher (Native Education College) who writes, produces, and performs one-person plays about mental health issues.
