The Royal Shakespeare Company will present dual stage adaptations of Hilary Mantel's bestselling books, WOLF HALL and BRING UP THE BODIES. Adapted for the stage by Mike Poulton, Mantel's books chronicle Cromwell's rise to power during the tumultuous reign of Henry VIII. The productions will run in repertory in the Swan Theatre beginning in December. Jeremy Herrin directs.
Ben Miles will take on the role of Thomas Cromwell. Miles began his career at the RSC and last performed with the company in 1993. He will be joined by Lucy Briers, making her RSC debut in the role of Katherine of Aragon. The role of Henry VII will be played by Nathaniel Parker. Paul Jesson will portray Cromwell's mentor, Cardinal Wolsey.
On the announcement of the news, Mantel commented: "It's very exciting for me to see the characters from the Cromwell novels spring to life, ready for the stage this winter. I'm delighted we have secured such gifted actors for four of the major figures in the plays, and look forward to meeting the rest of the cast in the near future."
Hilary Mantel became the first woman to win two Booker prizes when both WOLF HALL and BRING UP THE BODIES were awarded the honour. A third book, as yet unwritten, will complete the trilogy.
