Oscar Wilde brings an act of political sin into the heart of the English home with his comedic classic An Ideal Husband uniquely presented by Groundlings Theatre in two beautiful heritage buildings. Spending a week in Sutton House, a National Trust house based in Hackney and first built in Tudor times; this historic house full of oak panelled walls and history whispering from every nook and cranny, promises to be a perfect home for this classic play that is regularly ranked in the top 100 plays of all time.

Groundlings Theatre is no stranger to heritage buildings as it calls home is one of the oldest buildings in Portsmouth. Based in a Grade II* building first built in 1784, Groundlings Theatre is formerly known as the Portsea Beneficial Society building and whilst featuring an auditorium upstairs visited on at least two occasions by Queen Victoria, it's downstairs was one of the first free and first co-educational schools in the country.

An Ideal Husband tells the story of Sir Robert Chiltern's whose past dealings with Baron Arnheim in selling a certain government secrets in return for stocks in Suez Canal allows the cunning Mrs Cheveley to hatch a scheme of blackmail and bribery. Will Sir Robert Chiltern submit to Mrs Cheveley's demands or will Lady Gertrude Chiltern have a change of heart about her beloved husband and see he's not the Ideal Husband?

The production is directed by June Merrigan with a cast including, Stewart Briggs, Colette Redgrave and David Burton.

Groundings Theatre is an award-winning theatre and drama school based within a beautiful Grade II* listed building in Portsmouth affectionately known as 'Old Benny'. First built in 1784 by the Portsea Beneficial Society, Groundlings Theatre Company (GTC) has been restoring this historical building since 2010 after it was gutted by fire some years before. With a large auditorium, GTC produces 80% of its yearly programme, allowing its community and numerous volunteers to enjoy quality arts entertainment whether it be Shakespeare or Snow White. Remembering its original purpose as a place of education, our popular drama school has won numerous awards including Hampshire Business awards 'Best Drama School 2017'. Groundlings continues to engage both young and old to pursue their talent and creativity and manages to bring together a community.
