In 2013, This Is My Family, a new musical comedy from the pen of Tim Firth (Calendar Girls), took Sheffield by storm - smashing Box Office records, attracting critical plaudits and winning the prestigious UK Theatre Award for Best Musical. Now, this hilarious show takes to the Belgrade Theatre stage from Tues 28 Oct - Sat 1 Nov as part of a limited national tour.
Brought to life by a talented cast of six and a six-piece band, This Is My Family is a funny and moving musical about the sheer horrific nightmare of a family going on holiday together.
Clare Burt (London Road, National Theatre and film) is barely-coping mum, Yvonne; Bill Champion (Intimate Exchanges, A Chorus of Disapproval, Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough) plays DIY-disaster zone dad, Steve; Evelyn Hoskins (Misfits) is eternally optimistic daughter, Nicky; Terence Keeley (Beauty Queen of Leenane, Young Vic) is gothically pessimistic Matt; Rachel Lumberg (The Full Monty) plays the rather too free-spirited aunty, Sian, and Stratford-based actress Marjorie Yates (Shameless) completes the cast as elderly grandmother May.
Nicky is a typical teenager - surgically attached to her mobile phone and mortally embarrassed by her moderately dysfunctional family. When she wins the chance to take her family on the holiday of a lifetime, she decides to take them to pretty much the last place they would expect...
This fast-moving, laugh-out-loud and moving new musical goes to the heart of the question: what exactly is the point of family in the modern age?
'There have been musicals written about wars, revolutions, sibling rivalries and miraculous triumphs over adversity. I began to realise that most of these used to happen whenever our family went on holiday. Sometimes an ordinary family don't realise how extraordinary it is - and how deserving of its own musical.' - Tim Firth
