The Marlowe Theatre's resident orchestra explore the disillusionment and despair of war through the works of Britten, Elgar and Vaughan.
Elgar's impassioned Cello Concerto, his last work, was written from his countryside home in 1919, with the horror and suffering of the war still fresh in his mind.
Vaughan Williams's Symphony No 3 (Pastoral), published just a few years later, was written in response to his own experiences on the battlefields in France and his personal reflections. This subtly beautiful elegy for the dead is often felt to be the composer's War Requiem.
Four Seas Interludes and Peter Grimes, by Benjamin Britten conclude the evening, which will be conducted by Nicholas Collon (who has performed at The Marlowe with Glyndebourne on Tour), with guest appearances by Alisa Weilerstein (cello), and Elizabeth Watts (soprano).
The concert is at 7.30pm on Saturday 11 October. Tickets, priced from £11 to £34 (concessions available, discounts apply), are from the Box Office on 01227 787787, or at marlowetheatre.com.
